Dimensional Analysis Notes
Base Units
- Definition: Base Units are simple units in a measurement system based on natural phenomena or established standards, which serve as the foundation for deriving other units.
- Examples of Base Units:
- Meters (m)
- Grams (g)
- Seconds (s)
Converting Between Units
- Conversion Factor: To convert between units, utilize a conversion factor that allows the transformation of a unit into another.
- Placement Rules:
- The unit you have should be placed opposite the unit you’re converting from.
- The unit you want should be placed on the same level as the unit you are converting from.
Basic Scaling
- Kilo to Base:
- 1 kilo = 1000 base (e.g., 1 km = 1000 m)
- Base to Centi:
- Base = 100 centi (e.g., 1 m = 100 cm)
- Base to Milli:
- Base = 1000 milli (e.g., 1 m = 1000 mm)
Example Conversions
- Convert 100 centi to base:
- 100 c = 1 m
- Conversion Factor: 1 m = 100 c
- Convert between units must follow the placement rules to ensure accuracy.
