Platelets and Blood Clotting

Platelets:

  • Small cell fragments that play a crucial role in hemostasis

  • Form aggregates at the site of vessel injury to initiate clot formation

  • Contain granules that release chemical signals to recruit additional platelets and activate the clotting cascade

  • Help in the repair of blood vessels by facilitating tissue healing and regeneration.

Vascular Spasm: A temporary constriction of blood vessels that reduces blood flow to the area and minimizes blood loss during injury.

Platelet Plug Formation: The aggregation of platelets at the site of injury, where they adhere to the exposed collagen fibers and each other, leading to the formation of a temporary plug that helps seal the breach in the blood vessel wall.

Coagulation: This is the process by which blood changes from a liquid to a gel, forming a stable fibrin clot that reinforces the platelet plug and ensures that the site of injury is securely sealed.
