Ceramic Unit

  • Hand Building - Forming a ceramic piece without mechanical assistance (using the pinch, coil, or slab methods.)

  • Coil - Long ropes of clay of equal thickness used to build a ceramic object.

  • Pinch - When you pinch or press into the clay to change its form.

  • Slab - A rolled-out flat piece of clay for the artist to cut out of or build with.

  • Pinch Pot - Results from clay being pulled and pinched to shape the object

  • Vessel - A sculpture that is created to hold something

  • Score - The process of roughening up the edges of clay with a tool to join two pieces of clay together

  • Slip -  Watery clay used to “glue” two pieces of clay together

  • Embellishments - Details added to the surface of an existing work of art to enhance color, texture, etc.

  • Glaze - Chemical(s) applied to a clay surface that melt together and form a decorative and protective glass surface.

  • Wedging - The process of kneading or pressing the clay to ensure there are no air pockets inside that will cause it to crack or shatter in the kiln

  • Negative Space - The area of an artwork around and between the subjects 

  • Kiln - An oven for firing clay
