Lozère, France – Settlement & Service Provision

What the case study shows:

  • How remoteness and population size affect the availability of services

Full Notes Version (for understanding)

Location

  • Lozère is a landlocked department in south-east France.

  • The area is mountainous with poor soil, which limits agriculture and economic development.

  • The main economic activities are cattle farming and tourism.

Population characteristics

  • Many young people migrate out of the region to find work elsewhere.

  • This leaves behind an ageing population.

  • Because of improved transport, communication and tourism, the population has increased slightly in recent years.

Employment

  • Tourism provides jobs, but these are often:

    • Seasonal

    • Low-skilled

    • Low-paid

    • Part-time

Services and sphere of influence

  • Mende (population ~12,370) has many services such as railways, dentists, hotels, cinemas and leisure activities, so it has a large sphere of influence.

  • St-André-Capcèze (population 176) has far fewer services, and residents must travel 14–25 miles for activities such as skiing.

  • Villefort (population 639) has better access to services because it is well located.

  • Cubières and Altier are more remote, so they have fewer services, even though their populations may be larger than some other settlements.

Key idea

  • In Lozère, remoteness and accessibility often affect service provision more than population size alone.
