Principles and Elements of Design

  1. Balance - Elements on a page have visual weight (form, size, color, texture). Design stability requires appropriate scale for these elements.

    • Symmetrical: Identical shapes arranged equally on both sides.

    • Asymmetrical: Different shapes with equal visual weight.

  2. Unity - harmony produced by all the elements. “as one”

  3. Contrast - level of difference between design. It gives emphasis on that certain element. “unique”

  4. Emphasis - attention to a specific design element. It is similar to contrast or works with it.

  5. Repetition - using a repeated element.

  6. Pattern - repetition of more than one designed element.

  7. Rhythm - Visual tempo created by repeated elements with variation.
