What is “Experimental” News?

1) the storytelling methods employed:

a. telling a singular story through multiple modalities and a diversity of means

b. Broadcast, web, online, social, podcast, visuals, big data, etc

2) The subject covered;

a. people and topics not normally reported on in traditional reporting

b. ppl and topics not normally thought of in our day-to-day experiences

ppl and topics that go “unseen”

3) not gimmicky - relies on great storytelling

Journalists/Reporter:

Has strong writing and visual skill sets

Understand how stories are told over multiple platforms

Uses and is familiar with as many tools as possible

Is flexible, confident, adaptable and versatile when producing content

Is able to mind for and understands complex data sets

Is a savvy digital asset manager

Can size up a story for multiple avenues/modalities and asks what is most approprate

Can handle tight deadlines

Convergence impacts Journalism

Convergence:

• No singular definition but happens at two levels: institutional and content

Has a bottom line aspect to it but at its most ideal understanding sees the free flow of skills sets and benefits from multiple modalities produced in work.
