DIFFERENT LEARNING MODALITIES
With the advent of technology and challenges brought forth by the changing nature of teaching and léarning, different learning modalities emerged to cater and suit the paradigm shift in education. This suggests that pure face-to-face classes will no longer be the only trend in education all over the world. In the Philippines, emerging learning modalities are implemented and utilized to provide quality learning to students across levels.
The following are the different learning modalities introduced and adopted in Philippine education:
1. Blended Learning
- Blended Learning is defined as the integration of different learning modalities. It may be a mixture of face-to-face or online instruction (Dziuban et al., 2018).
- Blended learning in the new sense is not limited to both in-person learning and computer-assisted learning. In Blended Learning, modular and online learning may also be used or in the case of the Department of Education, Media-Reach Learning and Modular-Distance Learning are combined to provide learners education during the pandemic.
Singh (2021) classified these new dimensions as the following:
² Blending Offline and Online Learning - This happens without the internet and with the internet. In this learning, theories may be discussed virtually, while on-site classes are done for the application of theories.
² Blending Self-Paced, Live and Collaborative Learning - Self-paced learning could mean that learners are given opportunities to learn at their own pace through programmed instruction through modules or video lessons with activities Live learning could be online learning, while collaborative learning is undertaken during online classes.
² Blending Structured and Unstructured Learning - Both structured and unstructured learning can be mixed due to their flexibilities. The structured or programmed learning may be online or self-paced. The unstructured learning comes in during the informal meetings, groupings, and brainstorming based on the programmed instructions.
² Blending Custom Content with Off-the-Shelf Content - This blended learning is generic in nature where organizations or schools buy, avail or adopt other existing content. The contents may be self-paced or online tailored to fit with the organization or school standards.
² Blended Learning Practice and Performance Support - This type of Blended Learning supplements learning with application and performance support tools that aid for the correct application of the competencies.
Blended Learning is now adopted worldwide due to its extended reach of instruction, limited cost, and effectiveness. Blended Learning can cater more students in one virtual class compared to the limited number of students in a typical classroom setting. Schools can also save resources when adopting Blended Learning since school facilities are not fully maximized, and therefore school can save the electricity, equipment, resources, and even faculty expenses. Several studies also affirm that learners can learn through Blended Learning (Singh, 2021).
2. Flexible Learning
- Flexible Learning refers to the removal of boundaries of the four corners of the classroom.
In this modality, the focus is to make the learning environment adaptable with multiple classes, multiple teachers, technology-based intervention, and less control on learners' behavior. In other words, Flexible Learning advocates more on an open learning environment where teachers are guide on the side, learners have the freedom to choose how they want to learn, and technology and other resources are readily available (Niemi, 2021).
3. Home Schooling
- Parents or guardians play important roles in this modality because they have to serve as facilitators of learning to educate the child. Parents or More Knowledgeable Others (MKO) have to undergo training or seminars to teach their children at home since the role of the school is just to provide instructional materials or videos for students to study.
4. Enhanced Modified In-School Off-School Approach (E-MISOSA)
- This modality limits the number of learners who will come to school. For instance, learners have to come to school once or twice a week for face-to-face classes, while the three remaining school days every week will be spent by the learners at home doing self-paced learning. During the off-school days, parents or guardians serve as tutors or facilitate learning based on the learning materials provided by the schools.
5. Virtual Learning
- This is a modality where learners have to stay at home and participate in online learning activities. Hence, most of the activities in virtual learning are synchronous (real-time). Schools that will implement virtual learning have to ensure that the school has appropriate technologies and strong internet connectivity to support virtual learning. Learners must also have the gadgets and stable internet connectivity to learn from this modality.
6. E-Learning
- If virtual learning is synchronous, E-learning is the combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning but more emphasis is given to asynchronous learning where teachers prepare recorded videos to be sent to learners online or the recorded video lessons are stored in flash drives or another storage device then given to parents for learners to watch at home. Learners' outputs may be sent online or may be stored in storage devices then delivered by parents or guardians at school.
7. Media-Reach Learning
- It is a modality where learners learn either through radio or television. In this modality, schools schedule the airing of the lessons through radio or television. Educators nowadays call this modality either Radio-Based or TV-Based Instruction
8. Modular-Distance Learning
- This is an individualized instruction where learners have to answer the prepared or developed modules at home with the guidance of their parents or guardians. The modules may be printed or sent online, depending on the learners' choice and capacity. For the modular-distance learning print, parents have to get and return the modules based on the scheduled day and time. Meanwhile, if the learners choose the modular-distance learning online, teachers send the modules online, while learners have the option to send their answers online or answer in pieces of paper where their parents or them bring the answers to school based on the scheduled day and time.
Strategies of Teaching
1) Deductive Method - teacher presents the rule first then pupils apply it through examples
2) Introduction, Interaction, Integration (3I’s) - strategy that promotes participation, connects learning, and encourages reflection
3) Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) - reading strategy where students predicts, read and verify their predictions
4) Genuine Love for Reading plus Critical Thinking (GLR+CT) - students generalize the lesson, relate it to real life, transfer the skill and reflect on learning.
