Cambridge A-Level Mathematics 9709 March 2025 Grade Thresholds

Component-level grade thresholds

  • For Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709), the transcript lists the minimum raw marks required for each grade on each component, given the maximum raw marks available.

    • Component 1: maximum raw mark available = 75; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 61,
    • B: 55,
    • C: 45,
    • D: 36,
    • E: 27.
    • Component 2: maximum raw mark available = 50; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 40,
    • B: 36,
    • C: 29,
    • D: 22,
    • E: 15.
    • Component 3: maximum raw mark available = 75; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 64,
    • B: 56,
    • C: 46,
    • D: 36,
    • E: 25.
    • Component 4: maximum raw mark available = 50; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 44,
    • B: 38,
    • C: 32,
    • D: 26,
    • E: 20.
    • Component 5: maximum raw mark available = 50; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 43,
    • B: 38,
    • C: 33,
    • D: 27,
    • E: 22.
    • Component 6: maximum raw mark available = 50; minimum marks required for each grade:
    • A: 45,
    • B: 39,
    • C: 32,
    • D: 26,
    • E: 20.
  • Important note: A* does not exist at the level of an individual component. This means you cannot earn an A* based on a single component score alone; A* is awarded based on (and only applies to) the overall grade across the specified combination of components.

Overall grade thresholds by combination of components (maximum 250 marks)

  • The overall thresholds are defined for 11 different options, each specifying a maximum of 250 marks and the components to be combined for determining the final grade. For each option, the table provides the component set and the grade thresholds A*, A, B, C, D, and E.

    • Components: 32, 62, 78
    • Thresholds: A^* = 233, A = 216, B = 191, C = 158, D = 126, E = 94

Note on interpretation: Higher thresholds (A^*, A) require the combined performance across the specified components to meet or exceed the listed marks. The total maximum across the chosen components is 250.

Two-component (S4–S6) supplementary thresholds

  • For S4, S5, and S6, the maximum is 125, and these options use two components with a fixed pairing:

  • S4

    • Components: 12, 22
    • Thresholds: A^* = – (not applicable), A = 101, B = 91, C = 74, D = 58, E = 42
  • S5

    • Components: 12, 42
    • Thresholds: A^* = –, A = 105, B = 93, C = 77, D = 62, E = 47
  • S6

    • Components: 12, 52
    • Thresholds: A^* = –, A = 104, B = 93, C = 78, D = 63, E = 49
  • In S4–S6, note that the A* grade is not available for these two-component configurations.

Practical implications and connections

  • A* is only achievable in the overall grading framework (not per individual component).
  • The overall grade thresholds depend on which combination of components is used to compute the final result; several options exist to accommodate different assessment structures while preserving a consistent 250-point maximum.
  • The distribution of minimum marks per component influences how students allocate study effort across components to maximize the chance of achieving A, B, C, D, or E in the overall result.
  • The S4–S6 two-component options represent compact configurations with a smaller total maximum (125), possibly used for modular or alternative pathway assessments.
