Community Classroom

Before you are actually placed at your Community Classroom site, you will go through some “Basic Training”. This will consist of classroom time to help prepare you to meet the expectations of the “World of Work”. This classroom time will help your instructor become acquainted with you and determine that you have developed mature work attitudes.

During “basic training” we will be covering

  1. Employer expectations

  2. Safety and communication skills

  3. Human relation skills

  4. Ethics in the workplace

  5. Rules of Conduct for this class and your Community Classroom site

  6. Skills that will help you survive in the workplace

  1. Patient care skills

  2. Background in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology

During this “basic training” phase, we will reach a mutual agreement on where you will be placed for your “on-the-job” training. Your site will be selected from several local healthcare facilities participating in the program. Students are expected to demonstrate professional work habits in and out of the classroom, show positive work attitudes, have exceptional attendance and show favorable social media skills.. Students must have a grade of C or better to be considered.

Please keep in mind…students who do not meet these criteria will not be placed at job sites and will be counseled by their respective high school counselor for another class choice.

Once you are placed at a Community Classroom site, you will train for 3 days a week at your site hours to be determined and attend class 2 days a week. The instructor will visit your site to monitor your progress at least once every 2 weeks. Training may also be done in the evenings or weekends with prior arrangement  with your instructor and employer.

When you return to the classroom, a variety of planned learning activities will be presented to you. Classroom time and Community Classroom time are equally important to your progress. During your class sessions, we will help you meet the competencies and objectives of the course. All of this should add up to a first-class opportunity for you to obtain the experiences and references you need to open the door to successful employment in the future.

WHAT IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR IS UP TO YOU!

  • You are not getting paid by us or the Community Classroom site.

  • The business accepting you as an intern is not necessarily looking at you as a future employee, however, some interns prove their value and get a job.

  • We cannot place all of you where you want to be. The instructor tries to match your interests with the locations that will be best suited to you. Regardless, you will be learning valuable workplace skills and forming good networking relationships.

  • We do not switch students around from one business to another unless there is a very good reason. Give your site a chance. Don’t feel that you are going to learn the business overnight. It takes a while to really begin to feel at home at your site.

  • Your site supervisors are training you on their own and are not getting paid by us. They are usually sacrificing time for your sake that they could be using for their own job. A “thank you” goes a long way to show your appreciation for the time they take and is the only return they get from us.

  • Every day will not be exciting. If things are slow, be prepared to take advantage of it by asking good questions, showing an interest in learning more about the business, being curious, and taking the initiative in doing things that need to be done. What you get out of this program will depend a great deal on YOU and not on someone else.

  • In order for us to give you credit, you must complete the course objectives. Some of the course objectives are met at the Community Classroom site and the rest are met by class projects and activities and by maintaining excellent attendance.

  • You will not be placed at a job site if you are not ready, or do not meet all the qualifications.

  • Students not placed will have the option of changing classes or will spend community classroom time in the library. (December notification by instructor).

  • If you are asked to leave a job site due mid conduct you will receive a F for the semester regardless of your overall grade.

Immunizations

All students will be required to show proof of the following immunizations before being placed at a site. SUBJECT TO CHANGE

TWO Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccination (MMR)

TWO Chicken Pox vaccination (Varicella)

ONE Tetanus Diphtheria, Pertussis vaccination (Tdap) within 10 years

TWO skin test (TB/PPD) First one within 12 months and second one within 3 months

-These must be the skin test, questionnaire will not be accepted

Flu vaccination for this season or signed waiver

As of right now COVID shots are not required..

Proof of all immunizations, with the exception of ONE TB, must be turned in by September 27, 2024 in order to be placed. Students not placed because they did not turn in their immunizations will be transferred to another class for the spring semester. There are no exceptions to this.

COMMUNITY CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

  1. Friends and relatives are not to visit or call you while you are training at your site. If a friend or relative happens to come into the business while you are training, do not stand around talking. Meet your friends away from your site after your training time.

      2. Treat your assignment as though it is a job. Be on time, don’t wander off when

you are training, and don’t stand around. Remember to make a good impression.

If you don’t, you won’t get a job or a good reference if one becomes available.

     3. Your personal appearance must not be taken lightly. You must wear clothing

that is appropriate for the job you are doing. Certain businesses will have their own

dress code requirements. If what you wear is not keeping with the dress code, you

may be sent home for the day. Scrubs are available for check out from the

         instructor.

    4. Turn in your time cards every Monday. Be sure to establish a routine of

entering  your arrival and departure time accurately on your time card. This is to

be kept at your site in your job site folder and returned to class, signed, every

Monday. These will not be accepted late.  At a job if you do not

turn in your time card so you do not get paid.  Your grade if your payment.

     5. Turn off your cell phones at your job site.

***MANDATORY RULES TO FOLLOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE ABSENT:

  • Call your supervisor if it is a Community Classroom site day.

  • Call your instructor to inform him/her of your absence.

If a problem arises at your training site, notify your instructor immediately before taking any other action. Do not make an uncomfortable situation worse by arguing or exchanging comments that you may later regret.

COMMUNITY CLASSROOM EVALUATIONS

You will complete an Employability Skills Self-Evaluation during your time at the job site. This will be incorporated into your 2nd semester grade.

TIMECARD POLICIES

  • When you have a paid job, you won’t get paid unless you report every day. You would not get paid if you did not report to work. We have the same requirements in Medical Technologies. You will be expected to complete a timecard each week that shows your attendance. You will not get credit for your attendance unless you turn in a timecard each week.

  • It is your responsibility to keep track of the days and hours you spend at your site, as well as the hours you spend in the classroom.

  • Take your timecard to your worksite and ask your supervisor where you may keep it.

  • Your timecard is a weekly homework assignment.

  • Your timecard is due when you return to class Monday.

  • Fill out the timecard each day as you arrive and as you leave.

  • In order to get your points, you must have your supervisor (or whoever you work with) sign your timecard.

  • You are responsible for completing all information on the front of the card. Any sections missing will result in points being deducted.

  • Timecards that are not signed by a supervisor will not be accepted – NO points!

  • If you are absent on a class session day, it is your responsibility to turn in your timecard and any other class assignments the following day, even if it is a site day.

  • If you do not turn in your timecards weekly, you are jeopardizing your grade and are not following the rules of this program. If you did not turn in a timecard on a paid job, you would not be paid. This class operates the same way: YOUR SCHOOL CREDITS AND GRADE ARE YOUR PAY!

SAFETY

Safety is a word we often take for granted. There is very little likelihood you will encounter any danger or risk at your site. You may have heard the phrase, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Safety is so important to you that we require you to pass our safety test before you can be placed at your training site. SAFETY SHOULD ALWAYS BE YOUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN WHILE AT YOUR TRAINING SITE.

IN CASE OF INJURY

If you are injured at your training site, MUHSD insurance covers you. If the injury is serious, go to the nearest emergency hospital. If the injury is not considered serious, you must contact your instructor the day it occurs, even if no treatment is necessary.

Injuries occurring outside of your site that are unrelated to Medical Technologies are not covered by the MUHSD insurance. We can only provide protection for injuries that occur while you are performing your duties as an intern.

TRANSPORTATION GUIDELINES

Transportation may be available to transport students to their Community Classroom locations only. THIS IS A PRIVILEGE! It will be revoked for anyone who does not follow the transportation rules.

  • You may be assigned to a bus once you begin training at your site. If your bus does not pick you up at your site, call the transportation numbers that your instructor will give you.

  • If you miss your bus, report to your teacher or the library immediately. You will need to make up the time you miss at site. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CALL YOUR SITE SUPERVISOR TO LET THEM KNOW OF YOUR ABSENCE.

  • If you are riding on the bus to the worksite, you must return to school on the

bus (unless a parent checks you out early – then you must have appropriate

paperwork and notify TRANSPORTATION). WE DO NOT WANT THE

BUSSES WAITING TO PICK YOU UP FROM YOUR SITE AND YOU ARE

  • DO NOT RIDE WITH ANOTHER STUDENT IN HIS OR HER VEHICLE.

  • If you have permission to drive your own vehicle to your worksite, you may

only drive yourself – ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED

            IN YOUR VEHICLE.

GRADING POLICIES

In the world of work, excellent attendance is an expectation of all employers. Your success in this class will depend on your attention to this principle. Your attendance, in fact, will account for a major portion of your grade. People are fired if they don’t show up for work and if they don’t notify their supervisor when they are going to be absent. You take a chance of failing if you do not meet the attendance requirements. Assignments and tests will factor into your overall grade as well; see the syllabus for details.

Grading policy:

A = 90% -100%                       D= 60% - 69%

B = 80% - 89%                                 F= Below 60%

C =70% - 79%

Grading Scale:

Fall Semester             Spring Semester

Homework and Assignment policy:

All assignments are due on the date specified by the instructor. Late homework will be accepted as follow:

-Up to 3 days late with 75% being the maximum score *

-Up to 1 week late with 50% being the maximum score*

work equivalent to the number of days absent: ( 1 day absent = 1 day extra to turn

     in work)

-If you miss a test with a excused absence you have 3 days to make up the exam,

arrangement must be made with the instructor.

* Weekends and holidays are included in the late assignment policy since students have access to

   the material

** This has has dual enrollment with Merced College so redo/retake does not apply

Excused Absences:

  • You are required to notify your instructor and site supervisor each and every day of a consecutive site absence. You must make up an excused site absence and will need to arrange make up hours with your supervisor during the current week or by arrangement.

Unexcused Absences:

  • This is not tolerated in the world of work and is not acceptable in this class.

( 5 points will be deducted for each unexcused absence)

  • You must make up an unexcused site absence and will need to arrange make up hours with your supervisor during the current week or by arrangement.

Three unexcused absences will result in your removal from the class and a failing grade.

If you are having problems throughout the semester wheather in this class or in any aspect of being a student feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to do what I can to help, or get you in contact with the correct people.

YOU MAY BE WITHDRAWN FROM CLASS IF:

  • You do not show sufficient interest and enthusiasm.

  • You do not meet the training site dress code.

  • Your attendance and/or punctuality is unsatisfactory.

  • You demonstrate a poor attitude.
