  • Refers to having a disease or a symptom of disease or to the amount of disease within a population.

2. Key Concepts (IP)

  • Incidence

    • Refers to the occurrence of new cases of disease or injury in a population over a specified period of time.

    • Limited to new cases only.

  • Prevalence

    • Proportion of persons in a population who have a particular disease or attribute at a specified point in time or over a specified period.

    • Includes all cases, both new and pre-existing, in the population at the specified time.
