Thiamine is often deficient in alcoholics and can cause Wernicke encephalopathy if they attempt to metabolize food. Can cause dry peeling skin, confusion, numbness, tingling of the extremities, and thick reddened tongue (Wernicke-Korasakoff syndrome).
Hyperthyroidism can also cause Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome due to a lack of thiamine.
