Speech Requirements & Pacing

  • Topic Selection: Topics must be informative and neutral, requiring approval via the speech pitch to prevent overly narrow or persuasive topics.
  • Speech Duration: Must be between 4 to 7 minutes. Points are deducted for every 10 or 15 seconds under or over the time limit.
  • Delivery: Extemporaneous style; memorization is not required. Speakers should focus on conversational delivery and monitor nonverbal behaviors.
  • Sources: Requires 3 reputable sources (e.g., online news organizations, government sites, educational sites, journals, books, or professor interviews) that must be cited orally.
  • Materials & Visual Aids:
    • An outline must be submitted using the provided template.
    • Note cards, cut paper, or Post-it notes are required for speaking; laptops are not permitted, though phones may be used as stopwatches.
    • Slideshow visual aids (PowerPoint or Google Slides) are required.
  • Post-Speech: A self-reflection must be completed on Moodle/Capillary.

Rubric & Performance Factors

  • Grading Criteria: Evaluates introduction, body, conclusion, content, oral citations, audience analysis, and delivery.
  • Optional Additions: Props and limited audience participation are permitted.
  • Support: CommLab is available for assistance with speech anxiety.

  • Visual Aid Pacing (Zach):
    • Question: Can speakers change their own slides?
    • Answer: Yes, speakers manually control slides using a clicker or the space bar.
  • Note Card Formatting (Brent):
    • Question: Can notebooks be used instead of note cards?
    • Answer: No, notebooks are not allowed. Only note cards, Post-it notes, or cut pieces of paper that can be flipped through are acceptable.
  • Audience Connections & Class Examples:
    • Carter provided an example of a credibility statement regarding AirBud.
    • Alex provided an example of audience analysis by referencing Marquise.
    • The outline introduction template used an example prompt asking the audience how many have planted a tree.
