Types of Thyroid Medications
Levothyroxine:
Used for hypothyroidism; synthetic form of thyroxine (T4).
Helps to restore normal thyroid hormone levels.
Liothyronine:
Synthetic form of triiodothyronine (T3).
Often used in cases where a rapid response is needed, or if the patient does not convert T4 to T3 effectively.
Thyroid Desiccated:
Natural product derived from porcine thyroid glands, contains both T3 and T4.
Some patients prefer this over synthetic options due to a belief in more balanced hormone levels.
Indications for Use
Hypothyroidism
Goiter
Thyroid cancer (as part of treatment)
Certain cases of myxedema coma
Monitoring and Adjustments
Regular monitoring of thyroid function tests (TFTs) is essential to ensure proper dosing and to avoid complications such as thyrotoxicosis.
Doses may need to be adjusted based on weight changes, pregnancy, age, and other health conditions.
Side Effects
Signs of over-medication include symptoms of hyperthyroidism:
Increased heart rate
