Skeletal Muscle Tissue

  • Histological Structure

    • Skeletal muscle fibers are characterized as being long and cylindrical in shape.

    • The tissue exhibits striations (a striped appearance).

    • Each skeletal muscle fiber contains many nuclei (multinucleated).

    • These nuclei are peripherally located, meaning they are situated at the edges of the cell rather than the center.

  • Functions

    • Facilitates voluntary movement of the body.

    • Responsible for the production of heat as a metabolic byproduct of contraction.

    • Provides physical protection for internal organs.

Cardiac Muscle Tissue

  • Histological Structure

    • Cardiac muscle fibers are characterized as being short and branched.

    • Similar to skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle tissue is striated.

    • Each cell typically contains a single central nucleus.

  • Functions

    • The primary function is to contract in a coordinated manner to pump blood throughout the circulatory system.

Smooth Muscle Tissue

  • Histological Structure

    • Smooth muscle fibers are short and spindle-shaped (tapered at both ends).

    • Unlike skeletal and cardiac muscle, smooth muscle has no evident striation, appearing smooth under a microscope.

    • Each muscle fiber contains a single nucleus.

  • Functions

    • Responsible for various types of involuntary movement within the body.

    • Facilitates the movement of food through the digestive tract.

    • Provides involuntary control of respiration.

    • Facilitates the movement of secretions through various ducts.

    • Regulates the flow of blood within the arteries through the process of contraction.
