Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Histological Structure
Skeletal muscle fibers are characterized as being long and cylindrical in shape.
The tissue exhibits striations (a striped appearance).
Each skeletal muscle fiber contains many nuclei (multinucleated).
These nuclei are peripherally located, meaning they are situated at the edges of the cell rather than the center.
Functions
Facilitates voluntary movement of the body.
Responsible for the production of heat as a metabolic byproduct of contraction.
Provides physical protection for internal organs.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Histological Structure
Cardiac muscle fibers are characterized as being short and branched.
Similar to skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle tissue is striated.
Each cell typically contains a single central nucleus.
Functions
The primary function is to contract in a coordinated manner to pump blood throughout the circulatory system.
Smooth Muscle Tissue
Histological Structure
Smooth muscle fibers are short and spindle-shaped (tapered at both ends).
Unlike skeletal and cardiac muscle, smooth muscle has no evident striation, appearing smooth under a microscope.
Each muscle fiber contains a single nucleus.
Functions
Responsible for various types of involuntary movement within the body.
Facilitates the movement of food through the digestive tract.
Provides involuntary control of respiration.
Facilitates the movement of secretions through various ducts.
Regulates the flow of blood within the arteries through the process of contraction.
