Crime and deviance
Crime- Behaviour that breaks the formal laws of society and is punishable by legal sanctions such as fines or imprisonment
Deviance- Involves actions or behaviours that violate social norms. Deviance is relative meaning its relative so something seen as deviant in one society may be seen as acceptable in another
Social order- Refers to arrangement of practices and behaviours on which society’s members base their daily lives.
Social control- Refers to mechanisms through which society regulates individual behaviour to maintain order
Formal social control- Enforced by institutions such as police, courts, legal systems
Informal social control- Enforced through social norms, values such as peer pressure, family expectations
