An agreement between two countries to aid each other in a conflict or, at times, to at least remain neutral.

Annex

The takeover of a country that borders the invading country.

Austria’s Ultimatum 

The list of demands Austria gave to Serbia after Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the Black Hand. Serbia was to accomplish the demands or risk war.

Neutrality 

An official policy of staying out of a war.

1914-1918

The years within which World War One occurred.

Franz Ferdinand

The Austrian archduke whose assassination, at the hands of the Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand, sparked World War I.

Central Powers

The name given to Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire (the eventual losing side) in World War I.

Triple Entente

The name given to the pre World War I alliance between Great Britain, France and Russia.

Von Schlieffen Plan

In the event of a two-front war, Germany’s battle plan to invade and defeat France quickly and then turn around and defeat Russia. An attempt to fight two one front wars, one right after the other.

Western Front

The name given to the western side of the European fighting in World War I located mostly in Belgium and France.

Eastern Front

The name given to the eastern side of the European fighting in World War I located mostly in eastern Germany and Russia.

Trench Warfare

The defensive fighting strategy of digging into the earth to protect soldiers from the overwhelmingly deadly impact of new technology like the machine gun.

Shell shock

The name given to the vast increase in negative psychological and physiological reactions to constant artillery attack and other stressful environments of war.

U-boat

Allied nickname for the German Unterseeboot (under sea boat).

Lusitania

The British passenger liner sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Ireland in 1915. The sinking caused such international outrage that Germany backed off its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare.

Zimmerman Note

The message sent from Germany to Mexico inviting them to join the Central Powers by attacking the United States in exchange for the southwestern US when the Central Powers won the war. Mexico refused the offer.

Woodrow Wilson

President of the United States during World War I.

Treaty of Versailles

The treaty that officially ended the First World War for the majority of participants. Also considered a major cause of the Second World War.

Reparations

A name given to official payments by losing countries to winning countries as a consequence of losing a war.

Fourteen Points

President Woodrow Wilson’s post World War I plan to insure lasting peace among all countries.

League of Nations

The organization created by the Treaty of Versailles designed to host an ambassador from all member countries. It would serve as a way for countries to speak directly to each other in the hopes of avoiding conflict.
