Ecology - Ecological Succession
Ecological Succession
- Ecological succession is the process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time.
Primary vs. Secondary Succession
- Primary Succession (P):
- Begins in a virtually lifeless area where soil has not yet formed.
- Occurs on volcanic islands, on lava flows, and on rocks left by retreating glaciers.
- Usually begins with the establishment of lichens.
- Secondary Succession (S):
- Begins in habitats where communities were entirely or partially destroyed.
- Occurs on abandoned cropland.
- Succession in lakes and ponds.
