Ecology - Ecological Succession

Ecological Succession

  • Ecological succession is the process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time.

Primary vs. Secondary Succession

  • Primary Succession (P):
    • Begins in a virtually lifeless area where soil has not yet formed.
    • Occurs on volcanic islands, on lava flows, and on rocks left by retreating glaciers.
    • Usually begins with the establishment of lichens.
  • Secondary Succession (S):
    • Begins in habitats where communities were entirely or partially destroyed.
    • Occurs on abandoned cropland.
    • Succession in lakes and ponds.
