The imperfect

What is it used for?

• Antigamente/dantes + imperfect = the way things were/used to be

• Express frequency/repetition in the past. Imperfect + sempre

• Time + age in the past

• Enquanto + imperfect = simultaneous actions told in a narrative way

• Imperfect as a replacement of the conditional → mainly spoken, not in Brazil

• Past continuous = imperfect of ‘estar’ + verb → “I was doing something (imperfect) when something else happened”

• Narration: “once upon a time” = era una vez

• Imperfect of ‘costumar’ + verb = ‘used to’

Adverbs and time expressions most used with the imperfect:

• Antigamente

• Dantes

• Em tempos (back in those days)

• Todos os dias, todas as semanas, todos os meses, etc

Notes

• Many verbs in the imperfect correspond with ‘used to’ in English. The verb ‘costumar’ (not ‘accostumar’) means the same thing

• Há muito tempo que não faço um bolo. Hoje vou fazer um. → há + pres = I have(n’t) done… FOR

• Há muito tempo que não fazia um bolo mas hoje de manhã fiz um. = I had(n’) done… FOR

• venderam a casa porque…

  • they are old = estão

  • they were old = esteveram

  • they ‘got’ old = ficaram

• Vocês não têm tido noticias deles? Vocês não tiveram noticias deles até agora? → até agora, ainda não/já + PRET
