Notes on Selective Attention and Dichotic Listening Task
Cocktail Party Effect
The cocktail party effect refers to the ability to focus on one conversation in a crowded environment while filtering out other conversations.
In a cocktail party environment, individuals can selectively attend to a single conversation while ignoring the surrounding noise and chatter.
People can switch their attention from one conversation to another, especially if the new conversation is relevant or meaningful to them.
Hearing one's name in another conversation can immediately capture attention.
Important or urgent information, such as "there's a fire" or "Leonardo DiCaprio's over there," can also grab attention and prompt action.
Dichotic Listening Task
The dichotic listening task is a common method used to study selective attention.
In a typical dichotic listening task, participants wear headphones and hear different messages in each ear.
The experiment described is a modified version of the dichotic listening task, using human headphones (Paige and the speaker) to deliver different messages to each of Cody's ears.
Shadowing Task
Shadowing involves repeating aloud the message that is being presented in one ear.
In this experiment, Cody is asked to shadow Paige, which means he must repeat what she says as she reads a script.
This task requires focused attention and the ability to keep up with the speaker.
Example of shadowing:
Paige: "Much of intelligent behavior depends on successfully managing your attention. For example, while driving a car, you might devote most of your…"
Cody: "Much of intelligent behavior depends on successfully managing your attention. For example, while driving a car, you might devote most of your…"
Experiment Setup
Initially, only one "headphone" (Paige) is active, and Cody shadows her.
Then, the other "headphone" (the speaker) is activated, presenting a different message to the other ear.
Cody's task is to continue shadowing Paige while ignoring the message in the other ear.
The speaker reads a list three times: "Pay attention to page."
