Stratum Corneum
Thickness: 25-35 cell layers thick.
Composition: Composed of dead skin cells; no cellular organelles present.
Junctions: Features very tight intercellular junctions.
Shedding: The stratum corneum is continuously shed and replaced.
Function: Serves as the primary layer of protection for the skin and underlying structures.
Abnormal Conditions:
Callus (Callas): An abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum resulting from repeated abrasion.
Dermis
Characteristics: The dermis is vascular, containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
Composition: Consists of various types of cells including fibroblasts, which are crucial for the structure and function of the skin.

Determinants: Skin color is primarily determined by the secretion of three pigments:
Melanin

Carotene
Melanocyte Count: All humans possess a similar number of melanocytes; variations in skin color result from the amount and type of melanin secreted.

Pheomelanin:
Color: Yellow/red pigment.
Eumelanin:
Color: Brown/black pigment.
Freckles: Result from the accumulation of melanin in localized areas.
Nevi (Moles): Represent an overgrowth of melanocytes; differentiated from melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer.
Formation of Melanin
Process:
UV Light stimulates melanosome activity, leading to the synthesis of melanin from the amino acid tyrosine.
Function: Melanin absorbs UV light, playing a protective role by preventing DNA damage in the nuclei of skin cells.

Albinism:
Definition: A genetic inability to produce melanin due to the lack of the enzyme tyrosinase required for melanin synthesis.
Vitiligo:

Carotene
