Stratum Corneum

  • Thickness: 25-35 cell layers thick.

  • Composition: Composed of dead skin cells; no cellular organelles present.

  • Junctions: Features very tight intercellular junctions.

  • Shedding: The stratum corneum is continuously shed and replaced.

  • Function: Serves as the primary layer of protection for the skin and underlying structures.

  • Abnormal Conditions:

    • Callus (Callas): An abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum resulting from repeated abrasion.

Dermis

  • Characteristics: The dermis is vascular, containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.

  • Composition: Consists of various types of cells including fibroblasts, which are crucial for the structure and function of the skin.

Skin Color

  • Determinants: Skin color is primarily determined by the secretion of three pigments:

    1. Melanin

    2. Hemoglobin

    3. Carotene

  • Melanocyte Count: All humans possess a similar number of melanocytes; variations in skin color result from the amount and type of melanin secreted.

Types of Melanin

  1. Pheomelanin:

    • Color: Yellow/red pigment.

    • Color: Brown/black pigment.

  • Freckles: Result from the accumulation of melanin in localized areas.

Formation of Melanin

  • Process:

    • UV Light stimulates melanosome activity, leading to the synthesis of melanin from the amino acid tyrosine.

  • Function: Melanin absorbs UV light, playing a protective role by preventing DNA damage in the nuclei of skin cells.

Conditions Related to Melanin Production

  • Albinism:

    • Definition: A genetic inability to produce melanin due to the lack of the enzyme tyrosinase required for melanin synthesis.

  • Vitiligo:

    • Definition: A condition characterized by the loss of melanocytes from patches of skin, potentially resulting from an autoimmune reaction where antibodies attack melanocytes.

Hemoglobin and its Effects on Skin Color

  • Function: Hemoglobin can create a reddish hue when near the skin surface, enhanced during physical activity (e.g., exercise).

Carotene

  • Description: A yellow/orange pigment derived from ingested foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes.

  • Significance: Serves as a precursor to Vitamin A, which is vital for various bodily functions.
