Reflex Arc Overview

• Definition: Involuntary response from the pianist to the CNS without direct brain involvement.
• Functionality: Reflexes are automatic responses that occur before the brain is notified.

Reflex Arc Components

• Steps:
  • Stimulus Detection: Receptors sense stimuli.
  • Sensory Neurons: Send electrical impulses to relay neurons in the spinal cord.
  • Relay Neurons: Connect sensory neurons to motor neurons.
  • Motor Response: A quick reaction occurs (e.g., moving hand from heat).

Example of Reflex Action

• Knee Tap Reflex: Elicited by striking the kneecap with a mallet; results in a leg kick.
• Brain Notification: The brain learns about the reflex action after it has occurred, as it is not life-threatening.
