Predator - prey relationships

Predation is a kind of interspecific competition, operating between the predator and prey species

Predator - prey relationships

  • predators have evolved to become highly efficient at capturing prey

    • eg sudden bursts of speed, stealth, fast reactions

  • prey organisms have evolved alongside their predators

    • eg camouflage, mimicry, defence mechanisms such as spines

  • if evolution had not occurred one or both species may have become extinct
