  • keep the cover letter short - no more than one page

  • know the skills that the position entails and emphasize them

  • align those skills with the mission statement or goal of the company

  • avoid being negative - be professional and positive in tone

  • draw attention to key points - bold or use bullet points / section titles

  • align your words with the words used in the job post - do not plagiarize word-for-word just include main ideas and keywords

  • if you have a professional network with someone in the compnay, provide their name as to who directed you to the position

  • explain any reasons for an emplyment gap - keep it brief and straight to the point

  • if you have limited work experience, explain the training that you have that makes you qualified for the position

  • sell yourself - show them why they would benefit having you as part of their company! (avoid being modest - if comes across as someone with no experience when they see it in writing)
