Introduction to Heating Boilers

Before delving into the specifics, it's crucial to understand the fundamental difference between heating boilers and power boilers. The primary reason for the existence of heating boilers is that the larger industrial-sized power boilers are often too massive and complex for many applications that require only low-pressure heating. These industrial power plant boilers fall under ASME Section IV for their construction and operation guidelines.

Water Tube Heating Boilers

Industrial water tube boilers, which have been discussed in previous lectures, are generally not suitable for low-pressure heating applications for several reasons:

  • Cost: They are significantly more expensive to operate.
  • Water Treatment: They require extensive and costly high-quality water treatment.
  • Size: They are physically too large for typical heating plant installations.
  • Supervision: They demand a higher level of supervision and operational expertise.

Despite these limitations, specialized water tube heating boilers do exist. These are essentially modified versions of the industrial water tube boilers, adapted for heating purposes. They are typically physically smaller and incorporate design changes to suit lower-pressure applications, making them more economical and practical for heating plants.

Bent tube heating boilers are a common design, visually similar to the
