epithelium

1.) Why is connective tissue so important?

  • It helps us move, insulates, nutrients, toxin remover and protects as well as provide shock absorption.

2.) What are epithelial ridges (rete ridges or rete pegs)?

  • Groves that extend down from the epithelium into the connective tissue by pushing down the basement membrane.

  • What does it do? Provides surface area

3.) What is the difference between keratinized and non-keratinized tissue?

  • Keratinized tissue is dead cells on top of the skin, which is dense, while non-keratinized are living cells and softer which helps absorbs nutrients better and allows for secretion.

4.) What is the layer of connective tissue that extends into the epithelium called?

  • Connective Tissue Papilla

5.) What are the two major types of bone classifications? Where do we see them?

  • Cortical and Cancellous

  • Cortical is found in dense bone such as the femur

  • Cancellous is found in the jaw

    • You see it in the mouth more than anywhere else

6.) What function do the nerve receptors in the periodontium serve

  • Pain receptors, pressure, taste and proprioception
