Geographic Thinking
Key Concepts to Know
  1. Absolute Location: The exact location of a place, typically defined by latitude and longitude coordinates.
  2. Cartography: The study and practice of making maps, including the various techniques and features involved in map-making.
  3. Contagious Diffusion: A process where a phenomenon spreads rapidly through a population via direct contact.
  4. Cultural Landscape: A geographic area that includes cultural objects and natural resources that combine to express the relationship between human behavior and the environment.
  5. Density: The number of items or people in a given area.
  6. Diffusion: The process by which a characteristic spreads across space from one place to another.
  7. Distance Decay: A geographical concept that describes how things (like culture or economic activity) lose their value or significance the further one moves from their origin.
  8. Distribution: The arrangement of something across the Earth's surface.
  9. Environmental Determinism: The theory that the physical environment greatly shapes human behavior and cultural development.
  10. Equator: An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth, equidistant from the North and South Poles, at 0° latitude.
  11. Expansion Diffusion: When an idea or innovation expands outward from its original source while remaining strong there, often spreading to nearby areas.
  12. Formal Region: An area where certain characteristics are consistently shared; often defined by governmental or administrative boundaries.
  13. Friction of Distance: The concept explaining that distance affects interactions and the flow of information or goods between places.
  14. Functional Region: An area defined by a particular function or set of activities, such as a metropolitan area.

  26. Prime Meridian: The planet's meridian at 0° longitude, which runs through Greenwich, England.
  27. Map Projection: The method of representing the three-dimensional surface of the earth on a two-dimensional surface, involving certain distortions.
  28. Map Distortions (SADD): Various forms of distortion - Shape, Area, Distance, and Direction - that occur when projecting the globe onto a flat surface.

  41. Toponym: The name of a place, often reflecting its geographic and cultural history.
  42. Vernacular Region: An area defined informally by people’s perceptions and feelings rather than strict data or criteria.
Map Types and Information
  • Types of Maps: Include reference maps (for locations) and thematic maps (for specific themes such as population, climate). Each type has inherent weaknesses, as they may emphasize certain data while neglecting others.
  • Spatial Patterns Represented: Include absolute and relative distance and direction, clustering of items, dispersal, and changes in elevation.
  • Map Projections: All maps are selective in the information they present; distortions in shape, area, distance, and direction are inevitable in all map projections.
Geographic Data Collection
  • Data can be obtained fieldwise by various organizations or individuals.
  • Geospatial Technologies: Include GIS, satellite navigation systems, remote sensing technology, and online mapping services for data visualization.
  • Sources of Spatial Information: Come from written accounts like field observations, media reports, travel narratives, policy documents, interviews, landscape analysis, and photographic interpretation.
Geographic Decision-Making
  • Geospatial and Geographical Data: Utilized across various scales for personal, commercial, organizational, and governmental decision-making.
Major Geographic Concepts
  • Spatial Concepts: Include terms like absolute and relative location, space, place, flows, distance decay, and time-space compression.
  • Nature and Society Concepts: Emphasize sustainability, management of natural resources, and land use.
Scales of Analysis
  • Defined Scales: Include global, regional, national, and local levels, each revealing varying patterns and interpretations of geographic data.
  • Regions Defined by Characteristics: Include regions defined by specific unifying traits, patterns of activity, and those categorized as formal, functional, or perceptual/vernacular.
  • Transitional Boundaries: Regional boundaries can be ambiguous, contested, and often overlap, which geographers recognize in their analysis at various scales.
