Series Circuit 3 way switch

Black/Red = hot wire

White/Grey = neutral wire

Copper/Green = ground wire

Tools used

  • Stripper

  • Screwdriver

  • Linesman pliers

  • Screw Drill

Outlet: Hot, Ground, Neutral

3-way Switch: Hot, Hot, Hot, Ground

Hot switch - Hot wire is connected from main power source

Leg switch - Hot wire is connected to light

  1. Screw 3 conduit boxes down

  2. Cut 12/2 main wire and strip both ends (abt 6 inchs)

  3. Insert 6 inch of bare wire into power box and screw down

  4. Pull other end of bare wire through conduit 1

  5. Cut a piece of 12/3 wire through conduit 1 to conduit 2. Repeat from 2 to 3

  6. For Conduit 1 and 2:

    1. Take copper spare wire and fold in (U shaped) to box

    2. Take the matching wire, line up and cut to make equal, strip, then twist and cover with wire nut

    3. Take neutral wires, line up and cut to make equal, strip, then twist and cover with wire nut

    4. Take all hot wires (red and black) and strip

    5. Fold wire nuts into box

    6. Take the bare wires left out and make a small hook

    7. Connect wires to switch: 12/2 black wire to common (black screw), 12/3 black and red wires to transfers (other 2 screws), and copper pigtail to ground (green screw).

  1. For Conduit 3:

    1. Use 12/2 wire to pigtail hot and neutral lighting wires to their matching ones

    2. Fold ground into box

    3. Connect lightbulb

  2. For Power Box:

    1. Strip edges of wire

    2. Place neutral wire in first opening box to the left. Screw down

    3. Place ground wire in middle opening box to the left. Screw down

    4. Place hot wire in circuit breaker (hole under screw). Screw down

  3. Plug in cord
