abortion
'Abortion is wrong' (15)
CATHOLICS
Catholics would agree with this statement. They base this belief on the Catechism on the Catholic Church as it states that if life begins at conception and this is the start of a relationship with God. Furthermore, they believe that abortion is murder as it goes against the 10 commandments. Pope Francis would agree this statement as he instead promotes adoption as an alternative. Pope John Paul II reiterates as he stated that if the woman gets raped, she shouldn't punish the child for the father's sins. This is a weak argument as it doesn't take the thoughts or feelings of the mother into account at all, therefore not respecting her dignity.
CATHOLICS
In addition, Catholics follow the Principle Of Double Effect'. This means that if a mother's life is in saved which ends up killing the foetus then, this is not seen as abortion as the intention was to save the mother's life. They therefore still practice in all circumstances that abortion is wrong.
ANGLICANS
Anglicans would agree with this statement to an extent. They base their belief on the sanctity of life and don't promote abortion. Anglicans follow the belief of the lesser of 2 evils. In situations where the mother in danger, they believe that having an abortion is sometimes the most compassionate thing to do. Anglicans would encourage having the abortion as early as possible. they would promote better sex education to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
HUMANISTS
Humanists would disagree with this statement. They base their belief on the fact that it can be a better option for some. They believe that you have to take into consideration the long and short term effects of the decision. The quality of life is always taken into consideration. They promote better sex education and easier access to contraception so that abortion isn't needed. Peter Singer counter argues the bible as he states 'embryos aren't a person so abortion isn't killing a human' This is a strong argument as it considers the safety of women by supporting legislation and allowing women the choice, more people end up happy.
The most compelling argument is the Anglican argument as it has scope to both recognise the sanctity of life as well as still holding compassion for the mother
