food shortages in sudan case study

Why are there food shortages in Sudan?

  • There has been a civil war in the country for over 20 years between the government and rebel fighters this is due to the country splitting into north and south

  • The war meant people had to leave their homes and food production and distribution dropped so people rely on food imports

  • A lot of government money was spent on the military rather than food.

  • Also, there has been a long term decline in rainfall in southern Sudan leading to crop failure

What are the consequences of these food shortages?

  • This shortage of food lead to famine and therefore malnutrition

  • People suffering from malnutrition are more vulnerable to diseases

  • People who are starved of food have a reduced working ability

  • Malnutrition has meant 70,000 people have died from hunger in Sudan.
