Modifying Inaccessible Assessment Questions
Accessible assessment items must feature accessible content and design.
Accessible content and design ensure that learners can successfully understand and interact with the assessment.
It also helps confirm that the appropriate learning objectives and goals are being measured without interference.
Content. Accessible content eliminates any distracting information irrelevant for assessing the objective. For example, unnecessarily long word problems on math tests may skew results, as learners with lower reading comprehension skills, but adequate math skills, may struggle with the questions.
The language used should be as simple as possible and grade-level appropriate. This helps ensure that reading comprehension skills do not interfere with the evaluation of other unrelated skills.
Content should also avoid any idiomatic language, jargon, or cultural references that some students may not understand. Such content could pose issues for English learners and learners who have limited knowledge of the history or common customs of the United States.
Assessment should be fair to all learners and avoid information and references that are disrespectful to learners and irrelevant to the content being evaluated.
Topics and language unrelated to the learning objectives being tested that can be considered emotional, controversial, or stereotypical should be eliminated.
Accessible assessments let the learners know what is expected.
Clearly defined rubrics can assist with this. More consistent, objective grading is another benefit.
To ensure that assessments are evaluating the appropriate skills, assessment questions should be aligned to learning objectives from the lesson.
