Lymphatic System
Components of the Lymphatic System:
Lymphoid organs: lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and sinuses.
Additional components: lymphatic vessels, capillaries, lungs, and tissues.
Lymphatic Vessels:
Exist throughout the entire body.
Run alongside the veins.
Lymph Nodes:
Resemble small pea-sized patches throughout the body.
Commonly targeted in lymphatic massages to facilitate the release of excess fluids.
Functionality of the Lymphatic System:
Blood plasma leaks out between the cells during circulation.
15% of this leaked plasma drains into lymphatic capillaries.
Composition of Lymph:
Primarily consists of water, electrolytes, waste products from metabolizing cells, and a small amount of proteins.
Moves through the body aided by skeletal muscle contractions and the contraction of smooth muscle.
Clinical Relevance:
The lymphatic massage is used to help the body dispose of excess water and electrolytes, especially by feeling for nodes in the neck area.
Respiration
Definition of Respiration:
Involves the processes of inhalation (inspiration) and exhalation (expiration).
Measurement of Respiratory Rate:
Counting how many times a person inhales and exhales.
One full breath consists of one inhalation and one exhalation.
Usual measurement spans either 30 seconds or one full minute.
Process of Respiration:
Involves the lungs which supply oxygen to the cells and remove carbon dioxide.
Ventilation: Consists of both inspiration and expiration.
Anatomy of the Respiratory Tract:
Upper Respiratory Tract:
Nasal cavities, nose, pharynx, and larynx.
Lower Respiratory Tract:
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.
Lungs:
Composed of spongy tissues called alveoli.
Each lung consists of lobes; the right lung has three lobes, while the left lung has two due to anatomical constraints (heart location).
Patients with asthma typically have issues with inflamed alveoli and bronchi.
Lungs are covered by a two-layered sac called the pleura, preventing friction and damage.
Anatomy of Breathing Process
Air Flow Pathway:
Air enters through the nose, passes through the pharynx and larynx, and into the trachea.
The trachea divides into the left and right bronchus, which further subdivide into bronchioles and alveoli.
Diaphragm:
A muscle that separates the lung cavity from the abdominal cavity, playing a crucial role in breathing.
Digestive System
Function of the Alimentary Canal:
Main pathway for food entering the body and being processed.
Responsible for physical and chemical digestion, nutrient breakdown, and solid waste removal.
Major Parts of the Digestive System:
Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.
Accessory Organs:
Include teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Physical and Chemical Breakdown of Food:
Physical Breakdown (Mastication): Chewing food, initiating digestion.
Chemical Breakdown: Involves saliva and gastric juices aiding in digesting food.
Digestive Layers:
Mucosa: Innermost layer containing mucus and digestive enzymes.
Submucosa: Middle layer made up of loose connective tissue, containing glands and lymphatic vessels.
Muscularis Layer: Outermost layer with two thin layers of smooth muscle.
Muscle Movements in Digestion:
Relaxation and Contraction: Helps mix food with juices.
Peristalsis: Involuntary wave-like contractions that push food along the digestive tract. Very important terminology to remember.
Understanding Digestion:
Components of Digestion: Physical and chemical processes reduce food size for easier nutrient absorption.
The mixed food ball created during digestion is called a bolus, which is then pushed through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by peristalsis.
