Chemical Equilibrium and Temperature Changes

Reaction Direction with K Values

  • If equilibrium constant (K) is much less than 1 (K << 1):
    • The reaction favors the reverse direction.
  • Effects of Temperature Changes:
    • Raising temperature affects direction depending on reaction type (endothermic vs. exothermic).
    • Endothermic: forward reaction favored.
    • Exothermic: reverse reaction favored.
