Unit Overview and Learning Outcomes

  • This unit covers the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to present data and information appropriately.

  • Primary learning outcomes include gathering data/information, assessing the gathered data, and recording and presenting information.

Information Classifications and Confidentiality

  • Privileged Information: Refers to forms of data constituting privileged communication under the Rules of Court and other pertinent laws.

  • Sensitive Personal Information: Includes an individual’s race, ethnic origin, marital status, age, color, and religious, philosophical, or political affiliations. It also covers health, education, genetic or sexual life, and legal proceedings or offenses.

  • Government-Issued Identifiers: Includes social security numbers, health records, licenses, and tax returns issued by government agencies.

  • Confidentiality: The practice of keeping information secret or private, especially concerning healthcare and finances.

Data Subject Rights under RA 10173

Under the Republic Act No. 10173, individuals (data subjects) possess specific rights:

  • Right to be informed and Right to Access.

  • Right to Object and Right to Erasure or Blocking.

  • Right to Rectify and Right to Data Portability.

  • Right to Damages and Right to File a Complaint.

Processing and Protection of Data

  • Informed Consent: Individuals must be informed whether their information is being processed, the purpose of processing, and the scope and method used.

  • PII (Personally Identifiable Information): Any data used to identify an individual, such as email addresses, phone numbers, biometric data, and social security numbers.

  • Security Measures:

    • Files should be password protected and encrypted.

    • PII should be replaced with identification codes (ID codes) that do not include names or social security numbers.

    • Data collection should be anonymous whenever possible.

    • Contact lists should be destroyed when no longer needed.

    • Participants must be informed of how information is stored, who has access, and limitations like mandatory reporting laws.
