Drug Dependence

  • Miss Shepard will discuss drug dependence, so become familiar with it.

SSRI Medications

  • The chapter will introduce SSRI medications.
  • SSRIs are for anxiety.
  • It is important to understand how they work to avoid confusion when seen in the PowerPoint.

How SSRIs Work

  • Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, and sleep.
  • SSRIs increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Practical Demonstrations

  • Caffeine Machine: There's a caffeine machine to practice with, but it was leaking.
  • Colostomy Supplies: Colostomy supplies are available to examine, including a one-piece system where the wafer and bag are connected.

Colostomy Considerations

  • The adhesive is very strong, so be gentle with elderly patients' thin skin to avoid pulling it off.
  • Ensure the colostomy sticks well to prevent leaks and odor.

Puzzles and Case Studies

  • Puzzles: You can get a whole point if you get all the across and down right. Half a point for getting all across right.
  • Case Studies: Take your time with the case studies, which are due Monday.

Medication Administration Records

  • If you have your medication administration records, turn them in.

Confidence Building

  • The instructor is trying to provide nuggets of information to build confidence.

Catheterization Kits

  • Catheterization kits come prepackaged with everything needed.
  • The sterile field must remain sterile.
  • Contaminating the field renders it no good.

Kit Contents

  • Sterile gloves
  • Catheter
  • KY jelly
  • Be mindful of opening the package to maintain sterility.
  • Touching and examining equipment can reduce anxiety when working with patients.

Sterile Field

  • When you open your package, your package is your sterile field, and that would be correct because you gotta be able to and you can't have the way over there and try to bring it over here to do it.
  • Everything needs to be accessible during the procedure. Your beta dine swabs are probably gonna be in there because you gotta clean the patient before you insert. I guess they okay.

Practical Tips

  • Use adhesive remover to loosen the adhesive and prevent skin damage.
  • After inserting the catheter, give a gentle tug to ensure it's properly placed beyond the sphincter.

Supplemental Labs

  • The first four weeks are a supplement to the clinical piece and are separate from clinical grading.
  • Clock in for these labs.
  • Attendance is not mandatory but encouraged.

Schedule

  • Next week, Wednesday, class is from 8 AM to 1 PM, which is the last day of the supplemental lab.

Tutoring

  • Tutoring will be available on Wednesdays from 1 PM to 2 PM throughout the term, unless there are personal conflicts.
  • Use this time for clarification on covered chapters.
  • Next week will be just lecture.
  • Class starts at 8:30, not 8:00.
