Sympathetic Nervous System Notes

Peripheral Nervous System Organization

  • The peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of two components:
    • Sensory component: Allows perception of the environment.
    • Motor component: Controls behavior.

Nervous System Organization

  • The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is linked to the central nervous system (CNS) for environmental detection.
  • Sensory input travels through the sensory nervous system via afferent nerves to the CNS.
  • The motor output is controlled by the remaining part of the PNS
    • Somatic motor system: Controls skeletal muscle
    • Autonomic nervous system: Controls involuntary responses

Autonomic Nervous System Branches

  • Parasympathetic nervous system: Controls the body in rest and relaxation (
