the amendments

1st amendment - Guarantees the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

2nd amendment - Protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

3rd amendment - Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent during peacetime.

4th amendment - Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures and establishes the requirement of a warrant based on probable cause.

5th amendment - Guarantees the right to due process, protects against self-incrimination, and prohibits double jeopardy.

6th amendment - Guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial, an impartial jury, and to be informed of the charges against them.

7th amendment - Preserves the right to a jury trial in civil cases and prevents courts from overturning a jury's findings of fact.

8th amendment - Prohibits excessive bail and fines, as well as cruel and unusual punishment.

9th amendment - specific rights in the Constitution does not mean other, unenumerated rights retained by the people are denied or disparaged

10th amendment - Reserves powers not delegated to the federal government by the Constitution, nor prohibited to the states, to the states themselves or to the people.

14th amendment - Guarantees equal protection under the law and prohibits states from denying any person life, liberty, or property without due process.
