Natural Disasters Week 12

PROFESOR WENT TO FIELD TRIP IN MISSOURI

Three things to start a fire

  • Oxygen

  • Heat

  • Fuel

Many plants and animal species evolved with fires and fires has become important management tool

Stream/Rivers

  • Crucial to humanity

  • watershed: area of land that channels rainfall and snowmelt into streams, rivers, and eventually larger water bodies

  • Continental divide: separate drainages that flow through land

  • Overland flow occurs when:

    • rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soils

    • the soils are saturated and can’t hold any more water

  • Sheetwash: a thing, mobile sheet of water flows over the surface of a hill slope and may transport the surface material

  • Rills: very small stream or a shallow channel formed by flowing water
