Biblical Accounts of Creation

Genesis 1

  • Introduction: Describes the creation of the heavens and the earth by God.
Day 1
  • God creates light, separating it from darkness.
      - Key Verse: "Let there be light," and there was light.
      - God names light "day" and darkness "night."
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - first day.
Day 2
  • God creates a vault (the sky) to separate waters.
      - God calls the vault "sky."
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - second day.
Day 3
  • God gathers waters under the sky to let dry ground appear.
      - God names dry ground "land" and gathered waters "seas."
      - God commands land to produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees.
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - third day.
Day 4
  • God creates celestial bodies: lights in the sky.
      - Function: To separate day from night and mark sacred times, days, and years.
      - Created Bodies:
        - Greater light (sun) for day
        - Lesser light (moon) for night
        - Stars also created.
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - fourth day.
Day 5
  • God creates aquatic life and birds.
      - Creation:
        - Great sea creatures and every living thing in water
        - Winged birds
      - God blesses them to be fruitful and multiply.
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - fifth day.
Day 6
  • God creates land animals: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals.
      - Creation: Each according to their kinds.
  • Creation of Mankind:
      - God chooses to create mankind in His image (man and woman).
      - Key Verse: "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness."
      - God blesses mankind to be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion over all creation.
      - Food Provided: Every seed-bearing plant and tree for food.
      - Cycle: Evening and morning - sixth day.
Day 7
  • Completion of Creation: God completes His work and rests on the seventh day.
      - God blesses the seventh day and makes it holy.

Genesis 2

  • Summary of Creation: Details from Genesis 1.
      - States the earth and heavens were completed.
Creation of Man
  • God forms man from dust and breathes life into him.
  • Garden of Eden:
      - God plants a garden and places the man there to work it and take care of it.
      - Trees: Good for food and pleasing to the eye; includes the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Rivers of Eden
  • A river waters the garden, splitting into four headwaters:
      1. Pishon: Winds through the land of Havilah known for gold, aromatic resin, and onyx.
      2. Gihon: Winds through the land of Cush.
      3. Tigris: Runs along the east side of Ashur.
      4. Euphrates: Major river mentioned.
Command to Man
  • God commands man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
      - Warning: Eating from it will lead to death.
Creation of Woman
  • Man alone is not good; God decides to make a suitable helper for him.
  • God brings animals to man to name.
  • Creation of Woman:
      - God creates woman from man's rib.
      - Significance:
        - "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh."
        - Establishes unity in marriage: A man shall leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, becoming one flesh.
      - Both Adam and his wife were naked and felt no shame.
