Imperfect Tense (Imperfecto)
- Review of verb changes for AR, ER, and IR verbs in the present tense.
- Review of the preterite tense (one of the past tenses).
- Focus on the imperfect tense (another past tense).
- Accent marks are significant in the imperfect tense.
- For verbs ending in ER and IR, the endings are the same in the imperfect.
- Accent marks are present on all "i" endings for ER and IR verbs.
- For AR verbs, accent mark is only on the "a" in the "nosotros" form.
Usage of Imperfect Tense
- Preterite: Actions at a specific point in time where the order of events matters.
- Imperfect: Used for events in the past where the exact timing is not important, often used in storytelling.
- Example: Describing a weekend to a friend where the order of events is not crucial.
Conjugation Examples
- Hablar (to talk), Comer (to eat), Vivir (to live)
- Irregular verbs:
- Ir (to go)
- Ser (to be)
- Ver (to see)
- Note the accent marks on "i" endings for ER/IR verbs.
- Irregular verbs have variations in accent mark placement.
- Example: Ir (to go) - only has an accent on the nosotros/nosotras form
Practice with Imperfect Tense
- Imperfect tense endings will be used to conjugate verbs.
- Verbs to conjugate:
- Celebrar (to celebrate)
- Envolver (to wrap)
- Vestirse (to get dressed) - reflexive verb
Reflexive Verbs
- Reflexive verbs (ending in -se) require a reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb.
- Reflexive pronouns: me, te, se, nos, os, se
Reminders for Reflexive Verbs
- For "Vestirse" (to get dressed) in the "tú" form: "te vestías"
- The reflexive pronoun (te) is required along with the correct imperfect conjugation.
