  1. Health status

Overall health of an individual or a population, taking into account various factors such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors.

  • Life Expectancy

Number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if death rates do not change

  • Health Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE)

Number of HEALTHY YEARS that a person born in a particular year can expect to live based on current trends in death + disease patterns

  • Self-assessed health status

Overall measure of a populations health based on own perceptions of their health (measure own health)

  • Mortality

The number of DEATHS caused by a particular disease or factor

  • Infant mortality

Number of deaths that occur in the first year of life

  • Under 5 (U5MR)

Number of deaths of children under 5 years of age

  • Maternal mortality ratio

Refers to a death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days after giving birth due to pregnancy-related complications

  • Morbidity

ILL HEALTH in an individual and the levels of ill health in a population or group

  • Prevalence

Number or proportion of cases of a particular disease PRESENT in a population at a given time (AL - all cases)

  • Incidence

Number or rate of NEW CASES of a particular condition during a SPECIFIC time (IN with the new)

  • Burden of Disease

A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries. (Gap between current health status and ideal long and disease free life)

  • Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY)

Measures burden of disease (ONE DALY = 1 year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time with illness)
