INTRODUCTION TO METAPHYSICS

  • Dates: January 14-16, 2025

Definition of Metaphysics

  • Focuses on studies that transcend the physical.

  • Examines the nature of being itself.

  • Investigates first causes, or origins of existence.

Understanding First Causes

  • Any principle from which something else originates.

  • Example: Principle of non-contradiction — something cannot simultaneously both be and not be in the same manner and at the same time.

Concept of Being

  • Definition: That which is.

Latin Term "Esse"

  • Translates to "to be."

  • Refers to the act of existence.

  • Every entity possesses esse; without it, they would cease to exist.

Essence and Existence

  • Essence: What defines a thing’s existence.

    • Composed of two fundamental elements: matter and form.

Understanding Matter

  • Defined as what a thing is composed of (this-ness).

  • Distinguishes one entity from another.

  • Matter alone does not possess specific characteristics; it gains identity when associated with form.

    • Example: Clay as the matter in a statue, demonstrating potentiality for various forms.

Understanding Form

  • Form gives matter its shape, purpose, structure, and definition (what-ness of a thing).

  • Critical in determining a specific identity; it encapsulates the essence or nature of a substance making it distinct.

    • Example: A statue’s shape is its form, actualizing the clay's potential into a specific figure.

CO-PRINCIPLES

  • Two main principles:

    • Esse (Being): Represents existence.

    • Essence: Represents what a thing fundamentally is.

  • Additionally relevant concepts: Matter and Form.
