SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PRINCIPLES

  • Perioperative Context:

    • Definition: The perioperative period refers to the time period encompassing preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical care.
  • Sterility and Contamination:

    • A sterile instrument is one that is free from all microorganisms.
    • Contamination occurs when a sterile item or surface comes into contact with a nonsterile object or substance.
    • Examples of Contamination:
    • Accidental touching of a sterile glove to nonsterile items, e.g., door handles.
    • Skin punctures or breaches in sterile drapes can lead to contamination.
  • Gross Contamination:

    • Definition: The occurrence of a significant breach in sterility, such as ripping and spilling infectious materials into a sterile field or the peritoneal cavity.

DISINFECTION

  • Definition: Disinfection is the process that eliminates or reduces harmful microorganisms on inanimate surfaces or objects.
    • Disinfectants can vary in efficacy against different types of microorganisms.

ANTISEPSIS

  • Definition: Antisepsis refers to the destruction of microorganisms on living tissues, especially skin.
    • Antiseptic Application:
    • Commonly used in hand hygiene, surgical hand antisepsis, and preoperative skin preparation.

BARRIERS IN STERILE TECHNIQUE

  • Concept of Barriers:
    • Crucial principle in maintaining sterile technique involves creating barriers between potential contamination sources and sterile surfaces.

OPERATING ROOM ENVIRONMENT

  • Functional Zones of the Operating Room (OR):
