Inference

inference - where one memory disturbs the ability to recall another. thus may result in forgetting or distorting one or the other, or both

proactive inference - previously learnt info that interferes with new info you are trying to store (remember old not new)

retroactive inference - a newly learnt info that interferes with an old one (remember new not old)

Baddeley and Hitch - they asked rugby players to recall the name of the team they played. no matter the duration since the game they remembered if there were no interferences eg injuries

Evaluation -

strengths:

• effects everyday situations - proven

• drugs have an inference with remembering new info

weaknesses:

• interference is temporary and can be overcome with cues

• usual for interference to occur
