Functions of the Heart

  • The heart is crucial for life as it pumps blood throughout the body.
    • Delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs.

Nutrients and Energy Sources

  • Main nutrient discussed is glucose.
  • Other significant nutrients can include ions like sodium, potassium, and chloride essential for neuronal signaling.
  • Energy for cellular activity is derived from ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

Heart Location

  • Located in the mediastinum:
    • Space between the breastbone (sternum) and lungs.
    • Positioned more towards the left side of the body (approximately 67% left, 33% right).

Heart Structure Overview

  • Hearts have a unique structure, encapsulated in protective layers.
  • The study of the heart and related diseases is known as cardiology.

External Structures

  • Pericardium: Double-walled sac surrounding the heart.
    • Comprised of two layers:
    • Fibrous Layer: Made of connective tissue.
    • Serous Layer: Consists of two layers (parietal and visceral).
      • Parietal: Outer layer, adheres to the fibrous outer layer.
      • Visceral: Inner layer that directly covers the heart.
  • This structure prevents friction during the heart's contractions.

Heart Wall Composition

    • Endocardium:
    • Innermost layer lining heart chambers, covering valves and major vessels.
    • Composed of flat squamous cells to ensure smooth blood flow (laminar flow).
    • Myocardium:
    • Middle layer made of cardiac muscle tissue responsible for heart contractions.
    • Epicardium:
    • Outermost layer, part of the serous pericardium, which also protects and assists in heart function.

Heart Chambers and Valves

  • Chambers:
    • Atria (2): Collect blood from the body (right) or lungs (left).
    • Ventricles (2): Pump blood to the lungs (right) or body (left).
  • Valves:
    • Ensure unidirectional blood flow:
    1. Tricuspid Valve (Right AV Valve): 3 flaps, prevents backflow to the right atrium.
    2. Bicuspid Valve (Mitral Valve, Left AV Valve): 2 flaps, prevents backflow to the left atrium.
    3. Pulmonary Valve: Prevents backflow from pulmonary artery to right ventricle.
    4. Aortic Valve: Prevents backflow from aorta to left ventricle.

Pressure and Valve Function

  • Valves operate based on pressure changes:
    • When a ventricle contracts, pressure rises, which closes the valve.
    • When the ventricle relaxes, pressure decreases, causing the valves to open.
  • Efficient blood flow requires consistent valve operation without leakage (competency).

Common Heart Valve Issues

  • Incompetent Valves: Do not close properly, leading to backflow.
    • Can lead to conditions like aortic insufficiency where blood flows back into the left ventricle.
  • Stenotic Valves: Narrowed valves that impede blood flow, causing extra strain on the heart.
    • Associated with diseases and may require surgical intervention.

Treatment Options for Valve Issues

  • Replacement of valves can be necessary for severe cases:
    • Options include biological valves (e.g., porcine) or mechanical valves (man-made materials).
  • Blood thinners may be prescribed post-surgery to prevent clots around artificial valves.
