Women in the West
- after ww1 many women gained the right to vote
- at first, it was mainly war widows or mothers who could vote, but eventually, all women were given the right to vote
- they worked on the home front during WWI and WWII but were expected to go back to their domestic duties when the war ended
- in the 1950s and 1960s, women began to fight against domestic expectations and fought for equal power and earnings
- some statistics show that a woman earned 87 cents for every dollar a man made
- some argue that this is because women tend to work in occupations that pay less
- now, more women than men have post-secondary education
Women in the Developing world:
- Afghanistan: 87% of women admit to being victims of violence
- Iraq: women fear rape and kidnapping
- Western Sudan: abduction, rape, kidnapping
- Mali: female genital mutilation is extremely common
