The Outsiders Chapter 9 -10
Chapter 9
- Darry cooked baked chicken, corn, and potatoes
- Pony gets ready for the rumble by taking 5 aspirins
- Soda started shaving at 15, while Darry began at 13
- You don’t wear jackets during a rumble, so you don’t mess with your swinging ability
- While Dally, Soda, Steve, and Pony have long hair, Darry has short hair
- Soda fought for fun, Steve fought for hatred, Darry for pride, and Two-Bit for conformity
- All the boys know gymnastics because Darry took a course at the YMCA
- However, Ponyboy believes fighting is only suitable for self-defense
- Curly Shephard is Tim Shephard’s brother, he’s the same age as Pony, and they got caught trying to burn wholes in each other with cigarettes
- Curly Shephard is in jail
- Pony thought he and especially Darry was not going to stay hoods their entire life
- Other than the greasers, the two other parties at the rumble were Tim Shephard and his gang and the Brumly boys
- There are 22 socs and 20 greasers
- The difference between the greasers and the other gangs is that they have a set leader, while the greasers are all their own
- Pony was the youngest person at the rumble
- Tim Shephard reminds Pony of an alley cat
- Darry was the first person to step up to fight, and the volunteer to fight him was Paul Holden
- Paul Holden was one of Darry’s old friends (he played halfback)
- Pony is reminded of Jack London’s book during the rumble
- Paul took the first punch
- Dally came at the perfect moment to the rumble
- The greasers won the rumble since the Socs left first
- After the fight, Pony and Dally went to see Johnny
- A policeman caught up to them, but Pony acted sick to get out of the situation
- When Pony and Dally told Johnny they won, he told them: “Useless, fighting is no good“
- Johnny was the only thing Dally truly loved
- Johnny’s eyes glow with pride when Dally says that he is proud of him
- Johnny’s final words (to Pony) were: “Stay gold”
- Pony described Johnny’s dead body as a candle with the flame gone
Chapter 10
- Pony convinces himself that Johnny is not dead
- Because of the fight, Ponyboy had a minor concussion
- Pony has to walk home because Dally took the car
- Pony’s head was bleeding from the rumble
- A random man finds him and drives him home
- When he arrives home, there was no party because everyone was in agony
- However, Dally calls them and said he robbed a grocery store
- Dally ran to the vacant lot, where the gang met him
- Dally raised his gun (bluffing), but the cops shot him
- Pony believes Dally wanted to be dead, and Dally always gets what he wants
- While Dally died young and desperate, he died gallant.
- Darry told Pony that he was in the hospital due to exhaustion, shock, and a minor concussion
- Pony fell asleep on Saturday and woke up on Tuesday
- Darry told Pony he was in the hospital and was asking for mom, dad, him, and Soda a lot
- Pony feels bad because he believes he never called out for Darry
- Johnny left Pony “Gone with the wind“
- In the book southern men died gallantly, representing Dally’s death
- Because of everything that happened Pony missed a lot of school and track
- Soda snuggles up on the couch with him, and they fall asleep
