What is Learning?

  • Unlearned Behaviors: Instincts and reflexes are innate behaviors present from birth, aiding environmental adaptation.


  • Reflexes:

    • Motor/neural reactions to specific stimuli.

    • Simpler than instincts.

    • Involve specific body parts and primitive brain centers.

    • Example: Sucking reflex in human babies.


  • Instincts:

    • Natural ways of acting or thinking.

    • Triggered by a broad range of events (e.g., aging, change of seasons).

    • More complex and involve higher brain centers.


  • Learning: A relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge resulting from experience.

    • Involves acquiring skills/knowledge through experience.

    • Includes conscious and unconscious processes.

    • Helps organisms adapt to their environment through change and experience.


  • Associative Learning: Organisms make connections between stimuli or events occurring together.


  • What is Not Learning:

    • Changes due to temporary states (e.g., drugs).

    • Innate response tendencies.

    • Instincts.

    • Maturity.


  • S-R of Learning: Strengthening the relationship between Stimulus and Response.

    • Example:

      • Car (Stimulus) - Driving (Response).

      • Keyboard (Stimulus) - Typing (Response).

Classical Conditioning

  • Simple/Reflex Learning: Organism associates two stimuli, leading to unconscious or automatic learning.

  • Ivan Pavlov: Russian physiologist, discovered classical conditioning through digestion research on dogs.

  • S-S-R of Classical Conditioning: New learning due to repeated pairing of Stimulus-Stimulus-Response.


  • Definitions:

    • Stimulus: Any object, event, or experience that causes a response.

    • Reflex: An unlearned, involuntary response

    • Response: The reaction of an organism.


  • Process: Pairing a bell (neutral stimulus) with food (stimulus) to elicit salivation (automatic response), leading to new learning where the bell alone causes salivation.


  • Pavlov's Experiment:

    • Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS): Food in mouth.

    • Unconditioned Response (UCR): Salivation.

    • Neutral Stimulus: Tone.

    • Conditioned Stimulus (CS): Tone after conditioning.

    • Conditioned Response (CR): Salivation to the tone.

      In classical conditioning, this process illustrates how a neutral stimulus can lead to a conditioned response when paired appropriately with an unconditioned stimulus.


  • Classical Conditioning Components:

    • Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS): Stimulus that elicits a reflexive response (e.g., food).

Personality is the way you usually think, feel, and act.
It stays mostly the same over time and is made up of your traits, like being friendly, shy, organized, etc.


🧠 Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory

Freud believed your unconscious mind controls a lot of your behavior.

🔹 3 Parts of Personality:

  • Id = "I want it now!"
    → Follows the pleasure rule. (Ex: A baby cries when hungry.)

  • Ego = "Let’s be realistic."
    → Tries to meet the id’s needs in a reasonable way.

  • Superego = "That’s not right!"
    → Your moral side, wants to do what’s good/right.
