1. Begin by identifying…

• The topic the texts have in common

• The central idea or theme of each.  Is it similar or different?

2. Analyze HOW each author wrote about the topic

Elements to consider…

• Author’s  Purpose - what does the author hope to accomplish

• Author’s Perspective / POV

• Tone 

• Style:  how developed / why used / impact of author’s choice

  • Ie:  subjective (emotional) vs objective (factual)

  • Factual vs descriptive

  • Sentence Length / structure

• Text Structure

  • problem/solution compare/contrast   sequential  

descriptive  cause/effect

• Word Choice

  • Informal vs formal language

  • Emotional language

• Facts presented - type and purpose

• Mood -- how achieved?  

  • Focus on word choice
