  • The Reformation was quite bloody because every time the new ruler went from catholic to Anglican, the higher-ups that followed the other religion were eliminated.

  • Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

    • 1573, matriculated at Trinity Collge, Cambridge

    • trained as a lawyer

    • 1576, Gray’s Inn

    • 1577, France, the embassy of Sir Amias Paulet

    • 1579, his father’s death, back to Gray’s Inn

    • 1581, Parliament

    • 1584, “A letter of advice to the Queen,” urging moderation in religious policies

      • This put him on bad terms with the queen and basically locked him out of getting to work for the government

    • Bacon’s opposition to Elizabeth’s Subsidy Bill in 1593 undercut his political career. He remained in the shadow until her death, despite his acknowledged legal skills

    • 1601, Earl of Essex was tried and executed for treason; Bacon took park, showing no reservation or mercy. essentially killing his friend

  • 1605, Gunpowder plot by Catholics

    • attempting to blow up the parliament building while higher-ups are in there, fails because moisture gets into the gunpowder.

    • The Advancement of Learning (1605)

      • dedicated to James I

      • brings up Hermes which shows that he has been looking into alchemy and chemistry

    • wanted the power of the king in order to make a society that would execute his vision of philanthropy
