1984: Part 3, Chapter 6 - THE LAST ONE!!!!

Right thank the Saints it’s the last chapter. Winston is out of the Ministry of Love, he is in the Chestnut Tree Café - previously inhabited by the rebels in his photo. He is drinking copious amounts of gin and playing chess by himself?? He sees Julia, they exchange a brief conversation but Winston decides not to follow her. He goes back to the café and cries at a victory announcement on the telescreen.

\ (331) ‘A ray of sunlight slanting through a window fell yellow on the dusty table-tops’

  • Reminiscent of the Golden Country - shows that he now reveres the Party in the same way he once admired his rebellion of them.

\ (335) ‘She walked obliquely away across the grass as though trying to get rid of him’

  • She still has her survival instincts - this gives the impression that she will continue to rebel.

\ (335) ‘They could have lain down on the ground and done that if they had wanted to’

  • He cant even say sex anymore.

\ (339) ‘As though for reassurance he looked up at the imperturbable face in the portrait’

  • He realises how powerful they are and finds comfort in not feeling so powerless as he did before.

\ (342) ‘the final, indispensable, healing change had never happened, until this moment.’

          ‘The long-hoped-for bullet was entering his brain’

          ‘learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache’

          ‘self-willed exile’

          ‘He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.’
